IBM Germany Research & Development GmbH is one of the largest IBM development centers worldwide. Founded in 1953 and based in Boeblingen, south of Stuttgart, the lab is the cradle for a wide range of IBM software and hardware technologies. In close cooperation with other IBM development and research centers around the world, about 1,800 experts develop microprocessors, mainframes and software in more than 40 projects. Böblingen is located approx 20 km south of Stuttgart, and is near the Black Forest area of Germany. In the surrounding area of the Böblingen Development Center are many attractions for visitors to the area some well known - some not, the town of Tübingen often attracts tourists due to its old architecture and location along the Neckar river.
By car coming from Stuttgart
- A81 take exit 23 Boeblingen / Sindelfingen toward Boeblingen
- Merge into L1185/Rudolf-Diesel-Straße
- Drive through Boeblingen direction Schoenaich/Nuertingen (1,5 km)
- Slight left at L1185/Poststraße
- Turn right at Klaffensteinstraße/L1185 and continue to follow L1185 (2,8 km)
- After you have crossed the railway tracks outside Boeblingen turn right and follow the sign to IBM
By car coming from Herrenberg
- A81 take exit 23 Boeblingen / Sindelfingen toward Boeblingen

- By rental car
Follow the A8 to Karlsruhe
Turn right to A81 Singen at Autobahnkreuz Stuttgart
A81 take exit 23 Boeblingen / Sindelfingen toward Boeblingen
- Public transportation
The municipal rail (S-Bahn) departs from Stuttgart Airport. Take the (S-Bahn) S2 and S3 to Stuttgart central railway station. Exit at 'Stuttgart Rohr' and take the S1 direction Herrenberg. Exit at 'Boeblingen Bahnhof'. Here we recommmend to take a taxi to IBM Germany R&D.
By train or bus
- At the Stuttgart Central Station take the S1 (metro green 'S') direction Herrenberg
- Exit at 'Boeblingen Bahnhof'
- Here you can either take a taxi to the Boeblingen Lab or
- Take the Schoenbuchbahn (track 1) and exit at 'Zimmerschlag' from there the lab is in about 400m walking distance
- or at 'Boeblingen Bahnhof' take bus 709 to 'Rauher Kapf'. Exit at 'Taunusstraße'. The bus station is in 200 m walking distance.
